According to a survey conducted by Der Spiegel magazine, "44 per cent of those questioned saw the Tibetan spiritual and secular leader as a role model, while only 42 per cent attributed the same qualities to the pope".
"The Dalai Lama enjoyed a particularly high popularity rating among the young and better educated, according to the survey by the TNS research organization.
"Half of those questioned in these groups believed the Buddhist leader was able "to provide advice on how to live," according to the study, which showed that Germans found Buddhism a more sympathetic religion than Christianity or Islam.
"Asked what they thought was the "most peaceful religion," 43 per cent opted for Buddhism, while 41 per cent chose Christianity. Only 1 per cent picked Islam."
"The Bavarian-born pope was criticized by German protestants this week for endorsing a Vatican document reaffirming the primacy of the Catholic Church and dismissing other Christian denominations as either "defective" or "not proper churches."
"Secede not from the Church: for nothing is stronger than the church. Thy hope is the Church; thy salvation is the Church; thy refuge is the Church. It is higher than the heavens and wider than the earth. It never grows old but it is ever full of vigor. Wherefore holy writ pointing to its strength and stability calls it a mountain." St John Chrysostom (4th cent.)
Italian life expectancy is 78.3 years for men and 84 for women. But more significantly, Italy holds the world record for the highest percentage of what experts call the "old old." One out of every five elderly Italians is over 80.
Where did it all go wrong?
Italy, home to the Vatican and predominantly Catholic, legalized abortion in 1978, and Italians upheld the law in a 1981 referendum, despite fierce opposition by the Vatican to abortion. And Italians have long tended to ignore Vatican teaching forbidding contraception.
And the fruit of the "culture of death" is the death of a culture...
While decisions to have one or no children might make for easier lifestyles when young, a generation or two later the choice means fewer children and grandchildren to help the aged.
In 1950, Italy had five adult children for every elderly parent. Now five has shrunk to a statistical 1.5 and by 2050 there won't even be one adult child for every elderly person, said Antonio Golini, a demographer at Rome's La Sapienza University.
With no one to care for the elderly-- Italians have started to rely on foreigners and Catholic nuns.
So dependent have Italians become on the foreign caregivers that when the government offered an amnesty a few years ago for illegal immigrants, it placed no limits on the number of foreigners a family could employ if the workers cared for elderly.
[S]ome elderly, fearful of admitting foreigners to their homes, turn to another old fixture of Italy — nuns of the Roman Catholic Church.
Since nuns labor for God instead of a paycheck, room and board at homes for oldsters run by religious orders cost much less than at traditional nursing homes.
Caring for the elderly as a business also makes economic sense for the nuns.
When there were no longer enough children to fill the classrooms, the Disciples of Sisters of Eucharistic Jesus converted a nursery and elementary school in Rome's middle-class Garbatella neighborhood into a rest home.
"Our mothers stayed at home caring for their mothers and their mothers-in-law," said Sister Maria Cecilia at the home. "Now women work and don't even have time to care for their own children."

Cologne cocktails' killing men: Russian men are risking death by drinking aftershave and cleaning agents, a study has suggested. UK researchers estimated that half of all deaths in working age men in the country are due to hazardous drinking. The products, which also include herbal tinctures sold in pharmacies, are widely available, cheap and contain up to 97% alcohol, the Lancet study says.
And here is an excerpt of an interview with the crazed Dr. Death.
Are you at all religious, I asked him?
"Religion is all bunk. ... If you're really religious, you can't think for yourself."
Would you call yourself an atheist?
"Agnostic."
What do you think happens when we die?
"You stink. You rot and stink."
No soul?
He laughed. "What's a soul?"
And to all you men who have not gone mad ---thank you for your commitment and dedication to your families amidst the world's temptations. God Bless You. You are modern-day heroes and soldiers for Christ. Happy Father's Day
Likewise God has granted the grumblings of this generation that prefers the enslavement of sterility and pill popping infertility to the promise of a fertile future and entrance into the eternal paradise. Nations and peoples who have adopted, endorsed, and promoted this suicidal, sex-obsessed lifestyle will be quietly eliminated pursuant to their own desires.
Here are excerpts of an interview with Maggie Gallagher, president of the Institute for Marriage and Public Policy. From Charlotte.com
Q. Give us some insight into Western Europe's so-called "birth dearth."
A. Right now the European Union average is below 1.5 children per woman. It takes 2.1 to replace the population under modern conditions. Population demographers call anything less than 1.5 children "very low fertility." As you move towards one child per woman, you are talking about cutting your population in half in every generation. ...[T]his model won't sustain any culture that adopts it.
Q. Why? Abortion? Birth control?
A. Yes and no and I don't know. Even in Europe people say they want mostly two-child families. Why don't they have them? Television, restaurants, vacation travel, career ambition, movies, parties, bigger houses, less housework, less angst about husbands who don't pitch in. Having children seems to be a very hard these days -- [in] almost every developed society. Think about that: all the societies that in other ways are best for human flourishing -- stable, rule of law, democratic, affluent, free nations -- suddenly find themselves in a position where they don't remember how to do what every dinky tribe used to know how to do: get young men and women together to make and raise the next generation.
Q. Even traditionally Catholic nations like Ireland and Italy aren't having babies and are widely using birth control.
A. Italy is in a sustained plunge in terms of birth rates, one of the lowest in Europe. Ireland's birth rates only recently plunged below replacement (1.9) but their out of wedlock childbearing rate soared in the last 20 years ... from 5 percent to 30 percent. As they grow wealthy, they're adopting the Western pattern of non-family life.
Q. This happens as church attendance has dropped. Is there a correlation?
A. Well, certainly. How the causality works is a tease for social science to dissect, and it probably works in both directions: as people adopt family and sex codes in tension with religion they tend to leave it; and as people leave religions, they often lose the discipline and motivation to direct and channel sexual behavior in ways that benefit the next generation. They marry less, have more sex outside of marriage, cohabit more, divorce more, and have fewer children -- and more of them out of wedlock.
Q. Could it happen here [in the United States]?
A. Every developed country is experiencing a family crisis: first is "family fragmentation" difficulties in getting parents to get married, stay married and raise their children together. Second is a collapse in birthrates to levels insufficient to sustain the population. In the U.S., 37 percent of children are now born outside of marriage and close to half of all marriages end in divorce. We are, however, just about the only developed nation with birthrates at or near replacement level. [Our problem is serious but] not quite the same as in Europe. I suspect this has something to do with our higher rates of religiosity, patriotism and the pro-family tax code we have.
Is it any wonder that the family is unable to fight the lures of the world without the grace of a sacramental marriage?
"Terrence C. Donilon, an archdiocesan spokesman, said the church has launched a long-term effort to revitalize parish life and increase Mass attendance, marriages and baptisms."
"The document, which Donilon called “unofficial,” points out that evangelical Christians and Mormons have success in committing teens to their faith, while evangelization is a “low institutional priority” for the Catholic Church.
“There is a disconnect between what youth believe about God, themselves, their lives and their behavior,” the document said."
Without grace in the marriage and the family there is no future for the Faith. Evangelization must become a priority for all of us. Only when we boldly and unapologetically live our faith will the richness and treasures be rediscovered by the world at large. I can't help but think that one of the best evangelization tools and sources of grace for the entire world will be the return of the Tridentine latin mass. Excerpts from BostonHerald.com
Since God was banished from the schools, the family, and the souls of man, we are expected to believe that all is well. Our children are now in good hands under the new secularist regime.
What's wrong with you holdouts? You overly protective parents --just relax! Get back to work--make money, send your kids to the local public school. When you're burnt out after work --entertain them with the latest pop-culture fare--why make your life so difficult?
Don't worry. The highly educated secular experts are on the job trying to figure out why our children are sex obsessed deviants. Thus far there has been quite a bit of guesswork and they have not been able to grasp the cause of the problem yet--but they might--someday. In the meantime --just enjoy all your stuff!
Courts have seen the number of sex offense cases involving juvenile offenders rise dramatically in recent years, an Associated Press review of national statistics found, and treatment professionals say the offenders are getting younger and the crimes more violent.
The number of children under 18 accused of forcible rape, violent and nonviolent sex offenses rose from 24,100 in 1985 to 33,800 in 2004, the AP's analysis found. Violent offenses include attempted rape and sexual assault, while nonviolent offenses including fondling, statutory rape and prostitution.
Recent incidents include the cases of two 13-year-old boys in Omaha, Neb., who were accused in January of videotaping their assault of two 5-year-old girls and a 3-year-old boy, and of an 8-year-old Buffalo, N.Y., boy accused of assaulting a 6-year-old boy after he saw a prison rape scene in an R-rated movie.
Sharon Araji, an Alaska psychologist who took one of the first broad looks at the problem in her book "Sexually Aggressive Children," thinks the number of child-on-child sex crimes is actually even higher than the statistics indicate.
Only 28 percent of all violent sexual assaults are reported to police, according to a 1999 National Crime Victimization Survey. And cases of incest between siblings are widely thought to be underreported and may drive the numbers even higher, Araji says.
"The whole society is not yet up on this problem," Araji said. "These kids, on the extreme end, if nothing is done to catch them, they're going to become our adult offenders of tomorrow."
Studies show that one in two sex offenders began their sexually abusive behavior as juveniles.
The rise in juvenile sex offenders has spawned hundreds of new treatment facilities for children as young as 5.
In Alaska, lawyer Dennis Maloney calls it an epidemic.
His state has one of nation's highest per capita rates of youth sex offenders in treatment and one of the highest rates of treatment programs per capita. Others in the top seven are Hawaii, Idaho, Minnesota, Montana, New Hampshire and Vermont, according to the Safer Society Foundation.
Maloney represents the family of a 6-year-old boy raped by a fellow kindergartner. "He said 'Please, I'll be your best friend,'" the alleged victim said, according to a transcript of an interview with a police officer.
Experts say certain trends emerge among the cases of children charged with sex crimes against other children.
Many — estimates range from 40 percent to 80 percent — were molested themselves. And 42 percent have been exposed to hardcore pornography, the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, an arm of the U.S. Department of Justice, said in a 2001 report.

From Buzzle: Eastern Germany is facing a demographic crisis as huge numbers of women abandon the former communist region leaving behind an underclass of poorly educated, jobless and disillusioned men.
The population imbalance in the former communist state is worse than anywhere else in Europe, social scientists say. Even communities that traditionally have more men than women - such as the polar regions of Sweden and Finland, or the majority of remote Greek islands - do not have such pronounced male surpluses, according to a study by the Berlin Institute for Population and Development.
The study, Too Many Men, paints a bleak picture of young, partner-less men in the region; for every 100 men aged 25 to 30, there are just 80 women. Hundreds of thousands of eastern Germans of both sexes have left the former GDR in search of work in western Germany or abroad. But the exodus of young females (400,000 in the age range 18-29 since 1991) is believed to have more to do with the fact they are better educated than men and set on improved opportunities away from the rather depressed climate at home.
"The clever girls ... are leaving the east German working-class boys behind," said Reiner Klingholz, head of the Institute for Population. "In the west, many women look for their intellectual equal as a partner. As a result, most do not return."
The most dramatic effect of the imbalance was the growth of a "new, male-dominated underclass," said Mr Klingholz. Its members often have little chance either of finding a job or a partner, and as a result they are typically drawn to far-right parties, such as the German Nationalists (NPD) or to neo-Nazi groups. The proportion of eastern German women with degrees is 31%, compared to 20% of men.
A substantial number of men have nevertheless also left - 270,000 since 1991 - but a much higher percentage return, more often than not because they are disappointed by the experience, having failed to find a job and make social contacts.
The development is leading to social erosion on a large scale, according to the report, and is set to have an even more dramatic effect in the future. It is estimated that between 1995 and 2005, around 100,000 fewer babies were born in the region than would have been the case if the imbalance had not existed.
Europe has attempted to halt a demographic crash through socialistic legislation designed to stave off the muslim onslaught and increase its native population. Germany and other countries have begun paying women to have children and also provide nationalized child care. Although well intentioned, wisdom is lacking as to the source and solution. Because these laws are based upon a socialistic agenda, rather than bringing about lasting and necessary changes in the hearts and mind of its people --they will instead deepen the problem.
Paying women to have children is strictly an economic motivator and cannot achieve lasting generational changes that are needed for a society to continue to welcome children. Economic incentives do not make nurturing mothers and committed fathers. A self-giving, sacrificial mindset is required to rear children properly.
The children that are a product of these economic incentives are bought by the state, and then handed back over to the state at six weeks old. This is so mommy and daddy can work to pay for the state’s heavy, anti-family, tax burden that supports and furthers the government's agenda.
So many on the enlightened left want to dismiss the family as unnecessary to the preservation of civilization. They rally around government funded daycare, claiming that it will assist families and reduce their economic burden. But nationalized daycare is not only directly opposed to the preservation of the family, and ultimately civilization, but it increases the financial burden on a family through taxation. This undermines the ability of young couples to see past the shackles of government provided and subsidized contraceptives.
So many of our modern social conundrums emanate from this "benevolent nanny state".
“Socialists, Communists, and Nihilists...strive to uproot the foundations of civilized society.” Pope Leo XIII
"The main tenet of socialism, namely the community of good, must be rejected without qualification, for it would injure those it pretends to benefit, it would be contrary to the natural rights of man and would introduce confusion and disorder into the commonwealth." Pope Pius XI.
Socialism has blurred the lines of the sexes, and has indeed brought about confusion as to the God-given roles of men and women. As G.K. Chesterton said--the battle of the sexes is over-- women have conceded that the man’s role is better by assuming it. Women have lost their maternal instinct and men have lost their commitment and masculinity. The state buys the child, replaces the Mother, rocks the cradle, and has made the father dispensible through its economic freebies.
A deep and profound change is necessary in the souls of these nations to prevent a demographic crash. Women must abandon the feminist lies and the drudgery of office work over the rearing of their own children. Men must again become men-- committed to their indispensable role. And together they must reject the shackles of socialism and the contraceptive mentality.
This may seem highly unlikely, but nothing is impossible for God. Everything is impossible for Socialism--except the destruction of civilization.
Europe continues down the road of secularization and de-christianization. This from Deutsche Welle: German Chancellor Angela Merkel has said she has "given up hope" of having a reference to Europe's Judeo-Christian heritage enshrined in the new version of the European Union constitution.
Speaking in Brussels on Tuesday at a meeting with religious leaders of the Christian, Jewish and Islamic faiths, Merkel said she "would like to have such a reference in the treaty ... but there are not many chances left."
Merkel, the daughter of a Protestant pastor and the leader of Germany's strongly Catholic CDU party, has been pushing strongly for a reference to Christianity in the new charter. However, any attempt to mention Christianity or God in the treaty has been strictly opposed by secular France, liberal countries such as Sweden and Denmark and by Britain. During the 2004 negotiations on the bloc's original constitution, there were concerns that any religious reference could anger Europe's Muslims and Jews.
Pope Benedict XVI has made it his mission to guard the Christian inheritance that the EU now squanders by deliberate ommission. Cardinal Bertone delivered a message from the Pope at "Together for Europe 2007" --a conference of 250 christian organizations that was held in Stuttgart Germany. Cardinal Bertone stated: 'I would like to mention in a particular way the loss of Europe's Christian memory and heritage, accompanied by a kind of practical agnosticism and religious indifference whereby many Europeans give the impression of living without spiritual roots and somewhat like heirs who have squandered a patrimony entrusted to them by history.'
"All human efforts would amount to nothing, were we to be separated from divine support, because 'unless the Lord builds the house, they labor in vain who build'."
More self loathing of our Christian heritage in the U.K.-- A secondary school in West Sussex has banned purity or chastity rings because they violate a ban on jewelry in school. But the school allows Muslim students to wear headscarves and Sikh students kara bracelets as a means of religious expression. The ban is the latest in a series of episodes where organizations are banning Christian jewellery.
From The Guardian: A Christian teenager will go to the high court this summer to challenge the decision of her school to ban her from wearing a celibacy ring on the grounds that it is her basic human right to express her religious beliefs.
Lydia Playfoot, 16, will argue that the school is being discriminatory because it allows pupils from other faiths to wear religious adornments. Muslim and Sikh pupils at her all-girls secondary school in West Sussex are allowed to wear headscarves, trousers and kara bracelets.
The case of the teenager, who attends Millais school in Horsham, has the support of the Lawyers Christian Fellowship - an organisation that represents 2,000 Christian lawyers from across the UK.
Its public policy officer, Andrea Williams, said today: "This case is about Lydia's freedom of expression of her religious beliefs. It's about equality and about creating a level playing field as Muslim and Sikh pupils are allowed to manifest their faith through religious ornaments and she has been prohibited."
The case is expected to go before the high court before the summer recess.
The case has been in the legal pipeline for two years after Lydia was first banned from wearing the chastity ring, which has an inscription from the Bible, when she was 14.
Her father, Philip Playfoot, a full-time minister at the non-denominational King's church in Horsham, and her mother, Heather, support their daughter's legal challenge.
Today her mother told EducationGuardian.co.uk: "Lydia has been wearing the ring since she was 14 as part of her chastity commitment."
She explained the ring was a symbol of her daughter's Christian belief to remain celibate until marriage and to remain faithful after marriage.
She said: "We have only ever asked of the school that there is a level playing field for children from all faiths and to treat Christians with respect."
The case comes two months after the Department for Education and Skills (DfES) issued fresh school uniform guidelines.
Although the Playfoot case pre-dates this guidance, it was published following the case of a 12-year-old Muslim schoolgirl who took her education authority to the high court after she was refused permission to wear the full veil, or niqab.
The guidance was revised in March after the court upheld the decision of her school and Buckinghamshire county council.
The guidance says that schools "should act reasonably in accommodating religious requirements," under human rights legislation.
But it is also legally possible under the act to have a school uniform policy that "restricts the freedom of pupils to manifest their religion" on the grounds of health and safety and the "protection of the rights and freedoms of others".
The ring is worn as part of an abstinence pledge that schoolchildren take when they sign up to the US-based Christian scheme the Silver Ring Thing, which is aimed at high school students.
Protestantism has bred the radical secular relativism that we are confronted with today. The breakdown of belief in a central moral authority has ripened into militant relativism. Ultimately the rejection of a central moral and religious authority will bring about the demise of the West and America in particular.
So many today will agree that multiculturalism is a horrid failure but what of pluralism?
America is protestant and was founded upon pluralism. Pluralism is the notion that all religious belief systems and philosophies are equally valid. For both pluralists and multiculturalists absolute truth does not exist.
This rejection of absolute truth and authority by protestantism has slowly brought about the wholesale rejection of truth and morality by modern man. As one man became his own pope with the creation of sola scriptura, today the secular man rejects the entire notion of objective truth and creates his own version of reality. The heresy of protestantism has as its ultimate fruit the creation and growth of relativism.
We often hear: "No one has the right to tell me what is right and wrong." An equivalent statement is said by protestants about authority and hierarchy: "Who is the Pope to tell me what to believe." When these same protestants hear atheists proclaim that there is no right or wrong, or that there is no difference between Christianity and Islam they are appalled. The ideology that rejects a central moral authority is present in both protestantism and atheistic relativism.
"Such, then, is popular protestantism, considered in its opposition to Catholics. Its truth is establishment by law; its philosophy is theory; its faith is prejudice; its facts are fiction; its reasonings falacies; and its security is ignorance about those whom it is opposing. The law says that white is black; ignorance says, why not? Theory says it ought to be; fallacy says it must be; fiction says it is, and prejudice says it shall be." Card. Newman
America was founded upon the erroneous principal that all beliefs, cultures, and religions are equal--relativism is a necessary outgrowth. Only now are we beginning to see the deadliness of this ideology with its battle cry of 'tolerance, tolerance, tolerance'. When there exists homogeneity in a society then the utopian notion of multiculturalism and pluralism "appears" to work properly -- as it does in textbooks. But when Islam crosses the border, and modern atheistic concepts become a religion for a vast portion of the population, then America's days are numbered.
America Alone by Mark Steyn is an excellent book that warns of the demise of the West due to a “self-extinction” by the Western world which fails to have children while it “outsources its breeding” to Islam. Since Europe is fast becoming Eurabia, Mark Steyn concludes that America --if it has the “will” is destined to be the lone defender against Islam.
“But America can survive, prosper and defend its freedom only if it continues to believe in itself, in the sturdier virtues of self-reliance (not governement), in the centrality of family, and in the conviction that our country really is the world’s last best hope.” America Alone
No amount of self confidence or self-reliance in our nation or our people will prevent the the death of the West. The West’s potential demise is not about a lack of self confidence-- it is about sin. Sin’s cancer not only effects individual man but as the West’s demographics crisis reveals, it is the destroyer of peoples and nations. We are simply facing the manifestation of sin in the West.
Europe’s transformation into Eurabia does indeed involve a lack of “will” but the lack of “will” is due to it’s love of the sins that sterilize and kill the West’s progeny. More than three quarters of women of childbearing age are using artificial contraceptives.
The West has become accustomed to a selfish, hedonistic lifestyle that includes every form of fruitless, promiscuous, sexual satisfaction. This lifestyle demands a rigorous fidelity to contraception and if the contraception fails --abortion. These sins are mortally wounding to not only the men and women of the West but also threaten to annihilate nations and peoples. Our enemies need not invade --our enemy is within. We have lost our natural inclination to preserve the species through the suppression of our own God given fertility. God has permitted us our longings-- sterility.
There was a time when all of Christianity understood and condemned the evils of contraception. Historically all of the founders of protestantism condemned any act that prevented conception as a deadly sin and even likened it to sodomy:
Martin Luther
"[T]he exceedingly foul deed of Onan*, the basest of wretches . . . is a most disgraceful sin. It is far more atrocious than incest and adultery. We call it unchastity, yes, a sodomitic sin. For Onan goes in to her—that is, he lies with her and copulates—and, when it comes to the point of insemination, spills the semen, lest the woman conceive. Surely at such a time the order of nature established by God in procreation should be followed. Accordingly, it was a most disgraceful crime. . . . Consequently, he deserved to be killed by God. He committed an evil deed. Therefore, God punished him"
John Calvin
"The voluntary spilling of semen outside of intercourse between man and woman is a monstrous thing. Deliberately to withdraw from coitus in order that semen may fall on the ground is doubly monstrous. For this is to extinguish the hope of the race and to kill before he is born the hoped-for offspring."
John Wesley
"Onan*, though he consented to marry the widow, yet to the great abuse of his own body, of the wife he had married, and the memory of the brother that was gone, refused to raise of seed to his brother. Those sins that dishonor the body and defile it are very displeasing to God and evidences of vile affections. Observe, the thing which he did displeased the Lord—and it is to be feared; thousands, especially of single persons, by this very thing, still displease the Lord and destroy their own souls."
*The story of Onan can be found at Genesis 38:8-10.
Protestants succumbed to the overpowering culture of death at the 1930 Lambeth Conference when Anglicans became the first denomination to officially permit the usage of artificial contraception. Other denominations quickly followed. Today no Protestant church condemns its use. As it stands today the Catholic Church is the last holdout against the culture of death and all the sins that have led us down the road to demographic annihilation.
In the face of statistics and voluminous evidence of a demographic crash why does there remain such a disconnect by the world at large and more importantly among those who call themselves Christians on birth control? Why doesn’t the potential eradication of Western culture awaken us to the natural order or 'lex naturalis' that needs to be respected?
The Pope recently stated: “There is an urgent need to reflect upon the question of natural law and to rediscover its truth,” which “is common to all mankind...life is not the property of man but a gratuitous gift of God.”
“Natural law, is the source from which, along with fundamental rights, flow ethical imperatives that must be honored. Indeed, no law made by man can overturn the norms written by the Creator, without inflicting a dramatic injury to society in what constitutes its most basic foundation.”
Dramatic injury has indeed occurred as was predicted by Pope Paul VI in Humane Vitae in 1968:
1. The widespread use of contraception would "lead to conjugal infidelity and the general lowering of morality."
2. Man would ultimately lose "respect for the woman," and "no longer car[e] for her physical and psychological equilibrium". Man would come to consider women as an "instrument of selfish enjoyment, and no longer as his respected and beloved companion."
3. Widespread acceptance of contraception would place a "dangerous weapon... in the hands of those public authorities who take no heed of moral exigencies."
4. It would lead men and women to think that they had limitless dominion over their own bodies and functions.
All the above has come about. Divorce, serial monogamy, promiscuity, pornography and cohabitation are rampant. Women and motherhood have been demeaned beyond recognition--while women have deluded themselves that they are liberated. Our children have even become sex objects for the insatiable through an ever increasing appetite for child pornography. Western nations are now forced to pay women to have babies or face extinction. Others legislate the number of children its citizens can bear and force abortion and sterilization. Children are now seen as a burden, an expense and an inconvenience in the West. Venture out today with any more than a couple of kids in tow and the negative comments fly: “those are expensive”, “are those all yours” “are you done yet” or “don’t you know how that happens?”
Catholicism is indeed alone, not only in its battle against contraceptives and the culture of death but also in its literal belief in Jesus words that we are to eat the flesh and drink the blood of the Son of God.
“I tell you the truth, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in him. Just as the living Father sent me and I live because of the Father, so the one who feeds on me will live because of me. This is the bread that came down from heaven. Your forefathers ate manna and died, but he who feeds on this bread will live forever." I tell you the truth, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you.” John 6:53-58
The fact that that the Catholic Church is the only remaining church that both condemns contraceptives as a mortal sin and actually possesses Jesus Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity in the Eucharist is a testament to the divine origin of the Catholic Church.
It is precisely because of the Eucharist that the Catholic Church “remains in Him” as no other church can. The Eucharist and the courage to do battle against the culture of death cannot be separated from each other. It is not a coincidence that the two coexist only in the Catholic Church!
Thus without a return to the Faith this is the end of the world as we have known it. Catholicism alone condemns the evils that threaten the extinction of the Western world and does so through the power of the Eucharistic.
The International Herald Tribune has declared that traditional marriage is now out of style based upon the French presidential contenders' trend- setting rejection of it. Does what follows prove that traditional marriage is out of style or that Western civilization is in steep decline?
"Presidential candidate Segolene Royal is not married, and if she wins, her romantic partner plans to scorn the trappings of life as France's "first gentleman;" he swears he will not even live in the official Elysee Palace.
"Conservative contender Nicolas Sarkozy's marriage has been tabloid fodder. It was love at first sight when he fell for his second wife — at her wedding to someone else. During Sarkozy's run for the presidency, she left him for a while, and paparazzi photographed her hand-in-hand with another man...."
"Sarkozy, 52, jogs. Royal, 53, was photographed at the beach in a turquoise bikini.
"In an image-conscious race, both have modern relationships that many voters can relate to. Cecilia Sarkozy and Royal's partner, Socialist Party boss Francois Hollande, have made clear they will not give up their dreams and happiness for the presidency, said Christine Clerc, author of a book about presidential couples, "Tigres et tigresses" (Tigers and Tigresses).
"Sacrifice is no longer in style," Clerc says...
Asked in November if he wanted the title "first gentleman," Hollande said being the Socialist leader was enough for him. He also said he would not live in the presidential palace, whether or not Royal decides to. It is unclear what their four children, born from 1984 to 1992, would decide.
Royal says they did not need marriage to prove their love — a common sentiment in today's France, where nearly half of babies are born out of wedlock.
Sarkozy's relationship with his wife got off to an inauspicious start. He fell for Cecilia Ciganer Albeniz when, as the mayor of a Paris suburb, he officiated at her 1984 wedding to Jacques Martin, a TV personality, according to Catherine Nay's Sarkozy biography, "Un Pouvoir nomme desir" (A Power Named Desire).
Sarkozy was married to his first wife, Marie, at the time; the bride was pregnant with her new husband's baby. Sarkozy, smitten anyway, made sure the couples became friends.
But the friendship dissolved during a ski trip four years later, as Nay recounts. Nicolas Sarkozy's first wife, looking for her husband, purportedly found his telltale footprints in the snow — below Cecilia's window.
Nicolas and Cecilia divorced their respective spouses and married each other, having a son together in addition to children from other marriages. For several years she worked in her husband's ministries and helped organize his party rallies, a job that put her in contact with French events organizer Richard Attias.
The story of the Sarkozys' rocky marriage broke in 2005, when glamorous Mrs. Sarkozy appeared on the cover of Paris Match magazine in photos showing her strolling with Attias in Manhattan. The press chronicled the Sarkozys' separation in detail — including Mr. Sarkozy's association with a political journalist while his wife was away.
In his book, "Temoignage" (Testimony), Sarkozy said the separation was the hardest trial of his life. The saga was a sign of politicians' growing frankness about their personal lives — and voters' curiosity about them — in a country where the existence of late President Francois Mitterrand's mistress and illegitimate daughter was a secret throughout his presidency.
Since Cecilia Sarkozy's unexplained return, she has stayed behind the scenes, while rumors have swirled on the Internet about another separation. Many wondered if Nicolas Sarkozy would enter the Elysee as a single man.
"No man of common sense and goodwill, seeing the ills which afflict us, and which are particularly prevalent in certain countries, will take long to realize that the source of these calamities lies in neglect and official denial of God by whole societies, and often even at the family level."
"Our Holy Father the Pope said only recently that "once God has been abolished, disdain for the things of God turns man, stripped of his spiritual dignity, into the base slave of things material, suppressing and even uprooting all the beauty shown forth in virtue, love, hope, and the interior life."
"No civil society will ever be able to survive by banishing God, for the sacred principles of religion alone can justly balance the rights and duties of citizens, consolidate the foundations of the State, and regulate the actions of men by salutary laws, directing them in an orderly fashion toward virtue. The greatest of Roman orators wrote: You, O Pontiffs....defend the city more surely by the strength of religion than its ramparts defend it," and this becomes infinitely more true and more certain when the religion referred to is Christian faith and doctrine.
"Let all those who hold the reigns of government then, recognize these truths, and let the church be everywhere afforded the freedom which is her due, so that free from all impediment she may enlighten with her doctrine the minds of men, give to youth a sound education and formation in virtue, reaffirm the sacred character of the family, and penetrate all human life with her influence.
"Civil society will have nothing to fear from this salutary course; on the contrary it will reap the greatest benefits, for with social relations being governed with justice and equity, with the conditions of the needy being improved as necessary and amended to meet the requirements of human dignity, with discord finally quieted and spirits pacified in fraternal charity, better times may happily begin for all peoples and nations. Such is our ardent hope, and the object of our fervent prayers."

"Jenkins operates within a very short time frame. He suggests that by 2050 there will be thirty million Muslims in Europe. Other scholars believe the figure will be much higher. Whatever the more plausible number, 2050 is, in historical perspective, only a few years distant. The life of nations is, in their own self-understanding, very long. The Novus Ordo Seclorum on the Great Seal of the United States may be a self-flattering conceit, as may be France’s belief, stemming from 1789, that it bears the destiny of humanité, but to invest in and sacrifice for the future of a people and its way of life—the most palpable form of which is in having babies—requires a timeline much longer than 2050. People who do not, in continuity with the world they know, hope to have grandchildren who will hope to have grandchildren do not have babies. The sacrifice of the identities of nations and peoples to the deracinated idea of “Europe” as institutionalized in the European Union, combined with the forceful counternarrative of Islam, does not suggest a future in which many will make an intergenerational investment.
"But then, and despite his roseate projections, perhaps Philip Jenkins knows all this. Recall his observation that “both Christianity and Islam face real difficulties in surviving within Europe’s secular cultural ambience in anything like their familiar historic forms.” Europe is a historical phenomenon, and Europe without its familiar historic forms is not Europe. To speak of the death of Europe is not to suggest that the continent called Europe will disappear. It is possible that “Eurosecularity” in sustained tension with an Islamo-Christian cultural ambience will flourish, at least economically, for generations to come. But, with the establishment of Eurabia or the Maghreb, Europe “in anything like its familiar historic forms” will be a memory. That is what is meant by the death of Europe.
"At a recent dinner party with European intellectuals, I put to an influential French archbishop Daniel Pipes’ projection: Either assimilation or expulsion or Islamic takeover. That, he said, puts the possibilities much too starkly. “We hope for the first,” he said, “while we work at reducing immigration and prepare ourselves for soft Islamization.” Soft Islamization. It is a wan expression. Whether soft or hard, the prospect is that, in the not-so-distant future, someone will publish a book titled Allah’s Continent. In fact, several Muslim authors have already published books with very similar titles, anticipating the future of the Europe that was. Needless to say, and historical contingencies being as contingent as they are, I very much hope that they turn out to be wrong. As I very much wish Philip Jenkins’ God’s Continent provided better reasons for believing they are wrong."
The modern secular university is a wasteland of relativism, multiculturalism, and nihilism. Are we supposed to be surprised at how this "world view" manifests itself? Under secularism, why should anger be restrained? Why should we not kill? The fruits of secularism are tragic, and are an embarrassment. It is absurd to think that the secularism found in the West is attractive and inviting to Islam, and will ultimately breed assimilation.
This was confirmed in an official statement by the Iranian government, that upon first glance appears to be replete with hypocrisy and irony:
"Attacking innocent people, irrespective of their race and nationality, is contrary to divine and human values no matter which group or person carries out such an act under any name," the Iranian statement said."
A close look at the above statement reveals that Iran is actually being consistent in its position of killing innocents. Only killing based upon "race and nationality" is condemned. Killing of "infidels" in the name of allah, is not.
Authentic Christians are caught in the middle of two world views that are zealous in their hatred of Christianity. We must stand firm and stand out as being different from the culture at large. Only our deeply lived counter-culturalism will reconvert the West. The secularists stand for nothing, believe in nothing, condemn nothing, and espouse nothing. Dogma, doctrine, and discipline are attractive to those who possess nothing.
How long must we endure the lies of feminism? The demise of Western culture is largely due to our embrace of feminism and its inherent requirement that children be abandoned by their mothers. Despite the destruction, one nation after another continues to expand "childcare" until it has become another entitlement program. As one Bishop has termed it, women are no longer mothers they have become "birthing machines" for the state. Women give birth and hand their children over to the government to "nurture" and educate. Doesn't this sound a bit like the repackaging of communism?
FROM THE EPOCH TIMES:
Catholics Attack German Plans to Boost Child Care
BERLIN—Several senior German Catholics attacked government plans to raise the capacity of nurseries on Sunday, with one bishop saying the policy reminded him of communist East Germany and that it served "antiquated feminism".
The plans to boost the birth rate and raise child care to levels seen in other European states have stirred controversy in Germany, where conservative attitudes towards women's role in the family persist, especially in the Catholic South.
The strongest attack came from Augsburg Bishop Walter Mixa, who targeted Family Minister Ursula von der Leyen's plans to triple the number of childcare places by 2013.
"The policy, which is modelled on the former East Germany, is socially misguided and driven to a high degree by ideology," Mixa told the Passauer Neue Nachrichten.
In western Germany, where mothers are still encouraged to stay at home, there is provision for only one in 12 toddlers. In the east, where the socialist state set up a comprehensive childcare system, two in five children are covered.
Von der Leyen, mother of seven, won agreement from Germany's 16 federal states and local communities last week on an increase in care provision for children under three but they failed to agree on who will pay for it.
Mixa, who has in the past criticised German family policies for turning women into "birthing machines", also said the plans "served the antiquated feminist demands from the 1970s".
He won support from other Catholics.
Notker Wolf, head of Germany's Benedictine Order, told Welt am Sonntag he had problems with von der Leyen's plans.
"This is more than an offer, this is about changing society. Obviously a woman only counts if she works like a man and does not care for her child like a mother," Wolf said.
Yet another reason why parents are at war with our culture to preserve the innocence of our youth. Here is an admission from a British teachers union that our youth is being corrupted by materialism and commercialization. When the left-leaning leaders of public education in the West admit a cultural problem you can be sure that it is much worse than they perceive and report.
A culture that embraces sin will not tolerate innocence. Like an alcoholic that seeks the company of other drinkers, the materialistic and oversexed are all too anxious to share their love of sin with children. Further, the indiscriminate participation of our children in the lowest forms of our culture inevitably results in the perversion of childhood.
As a mother of five children seven and under, I can attest to the difficulty of finding modest clothes for little girls. Also, in speaking with acquantances who opted for public schools for their children, they are all in agreement, that children are growing up, or should I say are being corrupted, at very early ages. The teenage attitudes and the accompanying rebellion have backed up into adolescent years.
The following are excerpts from an article in the Daily Express:
"Big business is forcing children to grow up too quickly, teachers claim.
They say youngsters are bombarded with advertising for junk food and products which are “inappropriate”.
"The National Union of Teachers (NUT), which wants tighter controls on advertising that targets children, made the assessment at the start of its annual conference in Harrogate.
"It has launched a report highlighting what it believes is the commercialisation of childhood. Teachers at the conference complained that adverts encourage children to use “pester power” on their parents.
"Steve Sinnott, NUT general secretary, said some products being marketed to children were not suitable.
"Mr Sinnott cited examples of Tesco selling a pole-dancing kit and Asda selling black and pink lace lingerie and a push-up bra for nine-year-olds which he said “shortens” their childhood.
“Society is changing,” he said. “Some of it is for the better, some of it is not. These are examples of things which are not for the better.”
"The NUT, Britain’s biggest teachers union, is calling for a ban on all forms of advertising in schools and all marketing which promotes unhealthy food and drink to children. Its new charter, Growing Up In A Material World, was published at the conference.
"The union warned that many children felt pressurised into developing the perfect body, with teenage boys resorting to taking steroids and girls developing eating disorders and wearing sexualised clothing and make-up.
"The charter reads: “A disturbing aspect of children’s awareness of their body image is the trend for pre-teenage girls in particular to wear inappropriate and sexually provocative clothes and make-up."
Here is more from the same British public school system that generated the above report. From the Brussels Journal:
"One of the worst examples of this destructive intervention in family life is the sex education system that has been imposed on [British] schools. […] Not very long ago the Daily Telegraph ran a whole-page story headlined, Outrage over explicit sex lessons. Education correspondent John Clare described parents’ anger at 12-year-old children being given explicit sex lessons...
"Now another government-funded agency...has launched a “Schools Sex Manual”, subtitled “Nice Girls have Sex”. There is also a full colour booklet...for 13-year-olds called “The Good Grope Guide”. Is it any wonder that underage sex, childhood pregnancy and child abortion continue to increase under this British government?
"Brock Chisholm, the Canadian doctor who became Director-General of the World Health Organisation, decreed that children should be freed from national, religious and other cultural prejudices inflicted on them by their parents. He advocated that classroom sex education should be introduced, “eliminating the ways of the elders by force if necessary.”
"It is high time parents hit back and insisted on knowing what is being taught their children in secret and behind their backs. And let’s give children back their innocence."
Yesterday, I attended a different Catholic Church due to a schedule conflict. The gospel was on the woman who was found in adultery. Rather than take the opportunity to speak of the many aspects of hypersexuality in our culture, the priest spoke about discrimination against women by men. He stated that he was certain that all the women in the congregation at one time or another were a victim of sex discrimination.
His premise was fatally flawed. As a woman who became a lawyer and practiced law for several years, I can honestly say that I have NEVER felt discriminated against as a woman. Instead, I believe that at times, I received preferential treatment BECAUSE I was a woman.
The REAL abuse of women does not take place at the hands of males in the workplace. Instead, women suffer at the hands of other women through feminist lies. Everything I learned from feminists lacked wisdom, truth and was counter to Jesus' teachings. I learned selfishness, self-centeredness, hatred of tradition, that men were the enemy, that children were to be avoided and were "career killers".
A recent study proves that Feminism could also be bad for your health. From Daily Mail:
"A study in Sweden, arguably one of the most egalitarian countries in the world, discovered that men and women who are equal are more likely to suffer illness or disability.
Those who earn the same are also more likely to become unwell or suffer a disability.
People who have management jobs, male or female, were also found to die younger than those with a less pressured lifestyle.
The scientists, from the Swedish National Institute of Public Health, said a possible explanation for the link between equality and illness is that men's health may be adversely affected by a loss of what had been seen as traditional male privileges.
They suggested that women's health could be damaged by greater opportunities for risky behaviour as a result of increased income combined with the stress of longer working hours.
The report said: "The results suggest an unfortunate trade-off between gender equality as we know it and public health.
Now, liberals will inevitably interpret these findings as proof that there is not enough equality- and we just need more. Liberals can't help but "reinvent the wheel" instead of heeding the wisdom of the ages.
Without a belief in God or the afterlife secularists live only for this world. It is therefore incumbent upon them to create a utopia out of this world. But the secularist's utopian world view is doomed to fail. The only question is will we survive to see its destruction or will we perish with it. To survive we need the wisdom that only proceeds from God.
The secularists are wise in their own estimation but wordly wisdom is foolishness to God. The judgments of God are far different than the judgments of man. The secularists do and approve of those things that please man but offend God.
The Godless secularists are very proud of their “works”. Their view of good and evil is twisted to such an extent that they perceive good to be evil and evil to be good. They fight the “evils” of obesity, homophobia, smoking, religion, guns, global warming and overpopulation. They promote tolerance instead of love, relativism and multiculturalism, physician-assisted suicide, homosexuality, homosexual marriage, sexual license, abortion, absentee parenting, feminism, and fruitless sex.
They believe they know better than God what is good for man and in turn replace the natural law with the unnatural. They prevent the birth of “unwanted” babies through education about sex . And when the students of sex education do what they are taught--then they sneak them their free condoms and birth control without mom and dad finding out. And when the free condoms and birth control don’t work-- free abortions are made available. And when all the babies are gone and no one is having children anymore-- then they pay women to have babies.
Despite all our schooling and education we are sorely lacking wisdom. We have been “educated into imbecility” as Fr. John Corapi says. Our young people are not taught truth, they are taught trendy theories and how to debate what is true.
The bible says “[t]he fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding. Proverbs 9:10 But the fear of God is never found in a proud and haughty people. A true and proper fear of the Lord is born out of humility and a loving reverence which abhors offending God.
The wisdom of God tells us that in humility lies true strength. Only through Christ like humility will we obtain the fear of the Lord that will permit us the wisdom to prevail against our enemies. Only through humility will our shortsighted temporal utopian world view be transformed into an eternal view that will enable us to see the realities of our times and take the steps necessary to prevail against evil.
Why is it that so many have difficulty looking upon the Cross of Christ and His suffering? Many argue that Jesus is risen therefore why dwell on His suffering?
However, "[I]t is true and even tautological to say that the Cross is the crux of the matter." G.K. Chesterton. The lessons of the Cross are absolutely critical to living a truly christian life. The cross teaches us not only how to live but how to live with meaning and purpose. A christian is not truly a christian if they do not take up their cross.
Unfortunately, the purpose and meaning of suffering is lost on the West. Ayn Rand, the darling of modern atheistic thought rejected the Christian notion of suffering and said: "It's not that I don't suffer, it's that I know the unimportance of suffering, I know that pain is to be fought and thrown aside, not to be accepted as part of one's soul..."
The West fights against and throws aside suffering and even those that suffer. This "Schiavo-esque" view rejects all suffering as utterly detestible. We simply don't want to watch the poor soul suffer, so we relieve them of their misery and their life and call it "death with dignity". This explains our embrace of euthanasia, physician assisted suicide, stem cell research, our "termination" of babies and those that are not perfect. The irony is that our culture attempts to avoid suffering at all costs but in doing so has become the "culture of death".
Fr. Pablo Straub says the Devil's one commandment is "Thou Shalt Not Suffer". Our culture has certainly bought this diabolical line. The prevailing culture tells us to gratify our every desire and not to suffer for any reason. It tells parents not to have another child--it's too expensive and difficult; it tells us to indulge our every sexual whim and to embrace sterile sex; it tells women that foregoing a career and staying home to raise children is dull, unfulfilling, and irrelevant; it tells pregnant women that carrying a child for nine months will ruin their life.
Christians need to reject the lies of our culture and reclaim the power of Christ's Cross and our own crosses. "Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ's sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong." (2 Cor 12:10)
We can co-operate with God in a profound way by enduring our troubles through the power of His grace. God will strengthen us and, in turn, our cross can become a most powerful prayer. St. Paul enunciated the idea of the redemptive suffering. "I find joy in the sufferings I endure for you. In my own flesh I fill up what is lacking in the sufferings of Christ for the sake of His Body, the Church" (Col. 1:24).
The Church does not and never has glorified suffering for its own sake; however it does glorify God by the loving acceptance of suffering when His will entails it. "One ounce of patient suffering is worth far more than a pound of action." J. P. Camus.
The Angel of Fatima told the three children to "Offer prayers and sacrifices constantly to the Most High . . . Make of everything you can a sacrifice, and offer it to God as an act of reparation for the sins by which He is offended, and in supplication for the conversion of sinners . . . Above all, accept and bear with submission the sufferings which the Lord will send you."
It frightens one to think what humanity loses when it ceases to carry the cross and suffer in a manner that glorifies Christ and indeed becomes prayer. Our small acts of sacrifice united to Christ's Cross can achieve the conversion of entire peoples and nations. When we understand suffering and that bearing our cross has unimaginable power, life takes on a profound meaning and purpose. We will cease to become the culture of death and will truly dignify life and death.
"He who knoweth how how to suffer will enjoy much peace. Such a one is a conquerer of himself and lord of the world, a friend of Christ and an heir of heaven. Thomas a Kempis, The Imitation of Christ.
"Europe
will return to the Faith, or she will perish.
The Faith is Europe. And Europe is the
Faith."
Hillaire
Belloc, Europe
and the Faith.
The
following is excerpted from Joseph Ratzinger's speech
entitled "If Europe Hates Itself" given prior to his
becoming Pope.
"[W]hat is our culture, what’s left of it? Is the
civilization of technique and commerce spread
victoriously throughout the world actually European
culture? Or was this not perhaps rather born, in a
post-European way, from the end of the ancient
European cultures?
"Europe, precisely in this its hour of maximum
success, seems to have become empty inside, paralyzed
in a certain sense by a crisis in its circulatory
system, a crisis that puts its life at risk,
resorting, as it were, to transplants that cannot but
eliminate its identity. To this interior failure of
its fundamental spiritual powers corresponds the fact
that, even ethnically, Europe appears to be on the
way out. There is a strange lack of desire
for a future. Children, who are the future, are seen
as a threat for the present; the idea is that they
take something away from our life. They are not felt
as a hope, but rather as a limitation of the
present."
"As regards the possible future of Europe, there are
two opposite diagnoses."
[1] "On one hand there is the thesis of Oswald
Spengler who believed he could define a kind of
natural law for the great cultural expressions: there
is a moment of birth, the gradual growth, the
flourishing of a culture, then the on-come of
weariness, old age and death His thesis was
that the West had reached its final epoch, which is
moving inexorably towards the death of this cultural
continent, despite all efforts to avert it...."
[2] "Arnold Toynbee ...points out the
difference between material-technical progress on one
hand and real progress on the other, which he defines
as spiritualization. He admits that the
West—the western world—is in crisis, and he sees the
cause for this in the decline from religion to the
worship of technique, of nation, of militarism.
Ultimately, for him, the crisis means
secularism. If we know the causes of the crisis,
then we can find a way to cure it: the religious
factor has to be reintroduced.
"So the question is: is this diagnosis correct? And
if so, is it within our power to reintroduce the
religious moment, in a synthesis of residual
Christianity and mankind’s religious heritage? In the
end, the question between Spengler and Toynbee
remains open, because we cannot see into the
future... Thus we are faced with the question:
how are things to go ahead? In the violent
turbulence of our time, is there a European identity
that has a future and for which we can commit
ourselves with our whole being? I would
just like to indicate briefly the fundamental moral
elements, which to my mind should not be missing.
"The first element is the 'unconditionality' with
which human dignity and human rights must be
presented as values that precede any jurisdiction on
the part of the state. These basic rights are not
created by the legislator, nor conferred on the
citizens, “but rather exist in their own right, are
always to be respected by the legislator, are given
previously to him as values of a superior order.”
This validity of human dignity, previous to every
political action and to every political decision,
refers back ultimately to the Creator: only He
can establish values that are founded on the essence
of man and that are intangible. That there be values
that cannot be manipulated by anyone is the real,
true guarantee of our freedom and of man’s greatness;
Christian faith sees in this the mystery of the
Creator and of the condition of the image of God that
He conferred upon man.
"[T]here are very real threats to these values:
whether we think of cloning, or of the conservation
of human foetuses for organ donation, or of the whole
field of genetic manipulation—no one can ignore the
gradual erosion of human dignity that threatens us
here. Added to this are the growth in the traffic of
human persons, of new forms of slavery, trafficking
in human organs for transplant. Good ends are always
adopted in order to justify what is
unjustifiable."
"The second point in which the European identity
appears is marriage and the family. Monogamous
marriage, as the basic structure of the relationship
between man and woman and, at the same time, as the
cell of the formation of the state community, is
derived from biblical faith. This has given Western
Europe as well as Eastern Europe, its own particular
face and its own particular humanity, precisely
because the form of fidelity and self-denial set out
here had always to be conquered, over and over again,
with much effort and suffering. Europe would no
longer be Europe if this fundamental cell of its
social structure were to disappear or be essentially
changed.
"[W]e all know how threatened marriage and the family
are at present—on one hand by eroding their
indissolubility through easier forms of divorce, and
on the other hand by means of a new and more and more
widespread lifestyle, the cohabitation of man and
woman without the juridical form of marriage. In
stark contrast to all this is the request for
communion of life between homosexuals, who
paradoxically now demand a juridical form having the
same value as marriage. This tendency marks a
departure from the system of mankind’s moral history,
which, notwithstanding all the diverse juridical
forms of marriage, always recognized that marriage
is, in its essence, the particular communion of man
and woman that is open to children and thus to the
family. This is not a question of discrimination, but
rather the question of what the human person is, as
man and woman, and of how the togetherness of man and
woman can be given a juridical form. If on one hand
their togetherness is more and more detached from
juridical forms, and on the other hand, homosexual
union is seen more and more as having the same value
as marriage, then we are before a dissolution of
man’s image that can have only extremely grave
consequences."
"My last point is the religious question. I do not
want to enter into the complex discussions of recent
years, but to focus on only one aspect that is
fundamental for all cultures: respect for what the
other holds sacred, and in particular respect for the
sacred in the highest sense, for God, something that
we can legitimately suppose to find even in one who
is not disposed to believe in God. Wherever
this respect is denied, something essential in a
society is lost. In our present-day society,
thank God, whoever dishonours the faith of Israel,
its image of God or its great personalities, is
fined. Whoever scorns the Koran and the basic
convictions of Islam is fined, too.
"Instead, with regard to Christ and to what is sacred
for Christians, freedom of opinion seems to be the
supreme good, and to limit this would seem to
threaten or even destroy tolerance and freedom in
general. Freedom of opinion, though, finds its limit
in this, that it cannot destroy the honour and the
dignity of the other; it is not freedom to lie or to
destroy human rights.
"The West reveals here a hatred of itself, which is
strange and can be only considered pathological; the
West is laudably trying to open itself, full of
understanding, to external values, but it no longer
loves itself; in its own history, it now sees only
what is deplorable and destructive, while it is no
longer able to perceive what is great and
pure."
