ANTI-SEMITISM & THE PASSION

Okay if this does not get your blood boiling then your blood doesn't boil!! An article from the LA Times entitled "Clues Dismissed In Time Of "Passion"," by Tim Rutten is a rotten condemnation of Gibson's Passion. It is nothing more than the predictable revisitation of the trashing of the movie the Passion based upon the claim of anti-semitism on the part of Gibson. What liberals fail to realize is that in condemning the Passion as anti-semitic, they must necessarily condemn all of christianity as anti-semitic--an absurd and bigoted position.

We all knew this was going to come out again though with the recent arrest of Gibson. According to the Left the drunken anti-jew rant of Gibson undoes all the good Gibson did in making the Passion. It's time for the "I told you so". Now liberals have the ammunition they so desperately sought prior to the release of the Passion. Rutten seizes the opportunity and runs with it. However despite the headline's claim --he introduces no clues which were actually dismissed by those who chose to see the Passion. They simply were "clues" that did not prove the anti-semitism of the film. But here we go again anyway.

He cites the same old worn out rant as when the movie was first released including that Gibson relied upon the "anti-semitic" writings of Anne Catherine Emmrich. Rutten provides no basis as to why her writings are "anti-semitic" other than his own assertion that they are so. He states that Gibson also based the Passion on the gospel of Mathew--"the most problematic of all the gospels"- the fact that the Passion was based upon the Bible utterly and completely fails to prove that the Passion is anti-semitic.

Then we hear that "Gibson did not disavow the ideas of his father" argument. Why an express condemnation of his father's views is necessary is beyond me when he never expressly adopted his Father's views. He also repeatedly claimed it was against his religion to hate Jews and that the film was not anti-semitic.

Rutten goes for the jugular by citing Gibson's religous beliefs and involvement with traditional catholicism of which "traditional Catholicism's American variants all are infected to one degree or another with the ideas of the Jew-baiting..." Rutten attempted some internet research on the issue and quotes from a "leading independent traditionalist website" without revealing its name. An absence of citation of sources is very convenient and less taxing isn't it?

Finally one major item that Rutten conveniently overlooks is that the movie the Passion did not trigger anti-semitic protests nor was there backlash against Jews as was predicted by Gibson's detractors. Instead liberals worst nightmare came true --13 million adults (18 percent of those who saw it) altered their religious behavior, and 11 million (16 percent) changed their religious beliefs, after seeing the movie according to the Barna Group. Making it one of the best evangelical tools in modern times.

According to the logic of Rutten you--yes you too are an anti-semite --if you frequent the Latin Mass ...if you enjoy the gospel of Matthew or the writings of Ann Catherine Emmerich...or for that matter if you are an adherent of Christianity.

Liberals such as Rutten are always on the prowl seeking division and the ruin of Christianity and its adherents

Needless to say Rutten and his ilk are quite comfortable in their condemnation of Gibson as a catholic. Ironically we will never see the condemnation of true anti-semitism which takes place around the globe in the Arab world everyday. We also will never see a pro-Israeli position taken by the left as do the majority of Christians and conservatives.
